Planning on making the transition to climbing outdoor sport routes? Do you already climb inside but would like to learn the skills required to take your climbing outdoors? Have you climbed outdoors with friends and want to solidify your knowledge with up-to-date skills and techniques?

This course will prepare you for climbing at well-established sport-climbing crags that have bolted protection and top anchors. Get the knowledge you need to transition your indoor climbing outdoors, including two strategies for lowering once you have reached the top anchors, retrieving your gear, setting up a top-rope, and breaking it down before returning to the ground safely. All instruction is indoors at Crag X and all equipment is supplied.

The goal of this course is to provide a foundation on which certified ACMG guides like our friends at Island Alpine Guides will use to build your skills to be a fully fledged outdoor climber. We cover skills that are suitable for only the most basic and ideal outdoor situations. While we discuss outdoor hazards, IAG can provide the outdoor context and cover the many factors affecting climbing outside that can only be experienced in that environment.

Following this two part course, further instruction with an outdoor guide is highly recommended.

We have both a lead climbing version and top-rope version of this course. Climbers who are lead-tested at Crag X should take the lead version.

Lead Version:
Part 1 - Lead and Lower: Learn the basics of how to climb ground up and lower on rap rings, and how to retrieve your equipment on the way down.
Part 2 - Lead and Rappel: Building on the skills learned in part one, learn how to rappel off a route for situations when lowering isn’t favoured.
